Today, approximately 500,000 people in the United States have survived childhood cancer. Yet, more than 95% of those survivors will have a significant health problem related to their childhood cancer diagnosis or its treatment by age 45. Improved treatments for childhood cancer have decreased the number of deaths from the primary cancer, but because survivors are living longer they are experiencing more late effects after cancer treatment. Survivors and their families have struggled with fear and isolation as they contend with late effects on their own. But it doesn’t have to be that way.
